superSUDS - Solving Urban Pollution Effectively and Responsibly: Sustainable Drainage Systems

Objective(s): to tackle urban diffuse pollution and facilitate regeneration through innovative and novel techniques.

Deadline: the bid should be submitted in mid-summer 2007.

It is important to establish an integrated approach to urban drainage. This will enhance current flood risk management solutions and resolve capacity issues within the existing sewer and surface water drainage infrastructure.

Methodology: establishment of a partnership of the environmental regulator, local authorities, the sewerage undertaker and community engagement organisations to work together to find integrated urban drainage solutions.

Main outputs:

  • develop formalised partnerships of key stakeholders in the pilot catchment.
  • assess the current use and future potential for using new and retrofit SUDs in targeted regeneration areas.
  • develop a toolkit for the investigation and remediation of urban diffuse pollution and equip partners with the skills and knowledge to use it.
  • consider and trial alternative methods of pollution control and alternative approaches to regulation. Assess and develop appropriate voluntary initiatives.
  • deliver SUDs exemplars, overcoming the issues of adoption and maintenance. Develop appropriate mechanisms to ensure a wide dissemination of the exemplars.
