Home Page for Katrineholm

As a town Katrineholm is relatively young, having been granted a civic charter in 1917, but many findings indicate that the area was already inhabited over 6,000 years ago.

The really big change for the area was the arrival of the railway between Stockholm and Gothenburg in 1862. Katrineholm's solitary station became a node when use of the railway to Norrköping began in 1866. Enterprising men such as Carl Fredriksson, Gustaf Robert Grönkvist and August Kullberg came to Katrineholm, realised the importance of the railway and developed successful industries. Fredriksson started a joinery factory, Kullberg started a trading company and Grönkvist opened a smithy.

The old station has now been developed into a modern travel centre. From Katrineholm it is easy to get to Stockholm, Eskilstuna, Norrköping and Linköping by train. It is also close to Skavsta Airport near Nyköping.

The railway has gained increased importance for goods transportation. A modern logistics centre is developing, which will be a major asset for old and new companies seeking environmentally friendly transport.

Katrineholm combines the advantages of a small town with the opportunities of the capital city at a convenient distance. Katrineholm is attractively situated in Sörmland. The town is well known for its beautiful gardens and its fine natural surroundings. In winter the many lakes attract long-distance skaters, jig fishers and ice sailors. Katrineholm also has a long history as a sporting town. It has its own alpine facilities and offers everything from bandy to ice hockey, handball and other sporting activities, which you can either watch or take part in yourself.

In the summer you can visit some of our attractive sights, pack a picnic basket and cycle, canoe, walk or ride on one of our many fine trails.

Katrineholm has a rich cultural life. Ängeln Cultural Centre is a meeting place for all ages, offering literature, art and a wide-ranging programme. It houses a library, an art gallery, an auditorium and a café.

Katrineholm Municipality has been under Social Democrat control for about 80 years.
