Space for the past
The unique landscape of southeastern Drenthe has been determined largely by its history. Many of the villages in the municipality developed along the canals over which peat that had been dug in the vicinity was transported during the 19th and 20th centuries. The opportunity to make a living from agriculture and raising animals also attracted people from other regions to settle in this part of the Netherlands. Saxon-style farmhouses nestled among giant oak trees have been here for centuries. The many megalithic monuments found in the municipality are reminders of an even more distant past.
